With full-size pickup trucks making up the top three slots of the most popular vehicles in America, it is only natural that folks would like to explore the world of their smaller sibling, the midsize trucks. Two good models to compare are the 2022 Honda Ridgeline vs 2022 Ford Ranger. These midsize trucks give you towing and hauling capabilities not found in midsize SUVs, with many of the same luxury features of other midsize vehicles. They also give you the ruggedness and dependability you expect in a pickup truck.

Both the Honda Ridgeline and Ford Ranger are fairly new trucks. The Ridgeline was first introduced in 2006 and, after a brief three-year hiatus, returned in 2017 with its second-generation model. The Ranger has a longer lineage, going back to 1983. Ford discontinued the Ranger in 2011, waiting almost a decade to bring it back in 2019 as demand for midsize pickup trucks began to pick up.

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline is offered in four different trims, ranging from the base Sport model to the fully-loaded Black Edition. Meanwhile, Ford offers the 2022 Ranger in three different trims, going from the XL to the top trim Lariat. Ford also included a special edition for 2022, the Splash, with specialized colors and other exterior features.

    Engine and Transmission

Both the 2022 Honda Ridgeline and 2022 Ford Ranger feature one engine across all trim levels. All models of the Ridgeline come equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 gas engine, featuring Honda's legendary i-VTEC system and direct fuel injection, making it capable of producing 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine also features a variable cylinder management system to improve performance and idle-stop to boost fuel efficiency. The standard engine on the 2022 Ford Ranger is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost I-4. This engine also uses direct fuel injection but delivers a slightly lower 270 hp.

Honda has paired its standard 3.5-liter V6 gas engine on the 2022 Ridgeline with a 9-speed automatic transmission. This features a shift-by-wire system with paddle shifters to give you greater control over your truck's performance. Paddle shifters allow you to emulate the performance of a manual transmission without the hassle of working a clutch. The 2022 Ford Ranger comes with a standard 10-speed SelectShift automatic transmission. While the addition of an extra gear speed makes the Ford transmission slightly more efficient than the 9-speed on the Honda, the addition of the paddle shifters on the Honda transmission gives you greater overall control.

    Fuel Economy Ratings

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline comes standard with all-wheel drive and an estimated fuel economy rating of 18 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 21 MPG combined.[b] In contrast, the 2022 Ford Ranger comes with standard rear-wheel drive. While this will give you improved fuel economy compared to the Honda Ridgeline, it also means you will have to pay extra to get a 4x4 drivetrain on your truck. With 4x4, the 2022 Ford Ranger has nearly identical fuel economy numbers with an estimated 20 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and 22 MPG combined.

    Handling and Performance

When it comes to handling, drivers should find it easier to drive the 2022 Honda Ridgeline than the 2022 Ford Ranger. The Ridgeline has a tighter wheelbase than the Ranger, measuring 125.2-inches compared to the 126.8-inches on the Ford. Moreover, the Honda is also wider than the Ford, with a front track of 66.9-inches and a rear track of 66.8-inches. The Ford Ranger has a track width of only 61.4-inches on the front and rear. As a result, the Ford Ranger is longer and narrower than the Honda Ridgeline, making it harder to maneuver and corner.

In addition, the Ridgeline has a unibody design that is safer, lighter, and provides a smoother ride than the body-on-frame design of the Ranger. Finally, all 2022 Honda Ridgeline trims come with standard Intelligent Variable Torque Management. This system uses a clutch-based rear differential that will give you enhanced traction management compared to other all-wheel drive systems. If you want 4x4 on your Ranger, you are going to have to pay extra for it.

    Cabin Space

The 2022 Honda Ridgeline offers a standard crew cab on every model. This is the roomiest type of truck cab, giving you four full-size doors and two full rows of seats. It also allows you to seat up to five passengers. In contrast, the standard cab style on the 2022 Ford Ranger is a SuperCab, which is basically an extended cab design. This has two full-size front doors but only two pocket doors in the back. It also has room for only four passengers. In addition, the rear row on the Ranger's SuperCab isn't so super. If you want a crew cab on a 2022 Ranger with the ability to seat up to five passengers, you will have to pay extra for a SuperCrew.

Even if you choose to equip a 2022 Ford Ranger with a SuperCrew, you will not get as much passenger space as on a 2022 Honda Ridgeline. The front row passengers in a Ridgeline will enjoy 40.1 inches of headroom, 40.9 inches of legroom, 62 inches of shoulder room, and 59.1 inches of hip room. No matter which of the two cab designs you choose on the 2022 Ford Ranger, you will only get 39.8 inches of headroom, 43.1 inches of legroom, 56.6 inches of shoulder room, and 55.8 inches of hip room in the front row of seats. While that is slightly more legroom, you lose a great deal with the shoulder and hip room on the Ranger.

    Roomy Rear Row

When you move to the rear row of seats, the difference between the Honda Ridgeline and Ford Ranger is staggering. The rear row passengers in the crew cab of a Ridgeline will be able to stretch out with 38.8 inches of headroom, 36.7 inches of legroom, 61.5 inches of shoulder room, and 56.6 inches of hip room. This easily surpasses the 38.3 inches of headroom, 34.5 inches of legroom, 56.3 inches of shoulder room, and 53.5 inches of hip room in the rear seats of a 2022 Ford Ranger with a SuperCrew.

If you choose the smaller SuperCab on the Ford Ranger, the difference is even greater, as the rear row will only provide a cramped 35.9 inches of headroom, 30.4 inches of legroom, 55.2 inches of shoulder room, and 55.3 inches of hip room. Choosing a 2022 Honda Ridgeline gives you a roomier interior than any model of the 2022 Ford Ranger, and the best part is that it comes standard.

  • Technology

    Safety Technology

Automakers today have been equipping their vehicles with the latest in active driver assistance technologies. Honda and Ford are part of this revolution in safety technology, with Honda offering Honda Sensing features and Ford providing its Co-Pilot360 suite on many of its vehicles. With respect to its midsize trucks, though, Honda offers more standard Honda Sensing safety features on the 2022 Honda Ridgeline than Ford does with the Co-Pilot360 on the 2022 Ford Ranger.

Both the Honda Ridgeline and Ford Ranger provide a standard forward-collision warning system. This will alert you if a crash is imminent and also automatically engage the emergency brakes to bring your truck to a stop, reducing the chances of a collision or lessening the impact. Finally, these systems have a special detection system included to identify pedestrians and alert you if one is in the path of your truck so you can avoid a crash as well.

    Safety Differences

While those are the only Ford Co-Pilot360 features that come standard on the 2022 Ranger, Honda offers additional standard Honda Sensing features on the 2022 Ridgeline. Lane departure warning with lane-keeping assist will alert you if you drift out of the lane in your Ridgeline and use minor steering adjustments to get you back in the lane. This is very important if you start to lose concentration on long drives. Similarly, the road departure mitigation will detect if you are driving off the road and use small steering adjustments to get you safely back in your lane.

Finally, the Ridgeline features adaptive cruise control as a standard feature. This will detect if the vehicle in front of you is going slower than the speed you set on your cruise control and will automatically slow your truck down so you can avoid a collision. As soon as the other vehicle exits or increases its speed, the system will adjust your speed back to what you originally set on your cruise control.

As you can see, the 2022 Honda Ridgeline features more standard active safety features than the 2022 Ford Ranger. If you want to get these standard features on a Ranger, you will have to pay extra or get a higher trim level.

    Infotainment Technology

All 2022 Honda Ridgeline trucks feature the Display Audio infotainment system with an 8-inch color touchscreen, integrating key connectivity, entertainment, and information technologies on a single platform. This includes a 215-watt audio system with seven speakers and a subwoofer. You can easily choose your favorite music through Bluetooth streaming, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, allowing you to access your favorite apps on the road, including navigation to help you get wherever you are going. Finally, the Honda Display Audio includes the HondaLink system, so you can link your truck to your smart device for features like remote starting.

In contrast, the 2022 Ford Ranger only comes standard with a 4.2-inch touchscreen that does not include modern connectivity features. The standard sound system is also limited to a four-speaker AM/FM stereo system with Bluetooth. If you want to get the SYNC 3 system on a Ford Ranger, you are going to have to pay more for a higher trim level. In addition, the base model 2022 Ranger XL does not even have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. This can be very problematic for most drivers who rely on these smartphone apps when driving their vehicles.
