Honda: A History of Reliability

Over the years, all automakers have tried to stake their claim. Of the foreign brands, Honda’s rise from modest origins to not just recognition in the United States but all across the globe is one of ingenuity and tenacity. Additionally, this brand’s dedication to innovation and forward thinking continues to put them at the forefront of the industry—and when you consider that this brand started with two-wheeled vehicles, it makes the story even more empowering.

In 1946, bicycles were a common form of transportation, but one could only go as fast as their legs would carry them, which made Soichiro Honda wonder what would happen if an engine was added. Using the former Imperial Army’s generator engines, he went to work modifying 500 of them to gauge functionality and popularity.

With both of those boxes checked, he continued with his work, and in 1947, the A-Type engine hit the market, leading to the incorporation of the Honda Motor Company. The 34-member team’s work led to the development of the “Dream” D-Type motorcycle in 1949 and Honda’s first stint with motorcycle racing. However, motorcycles weren’t the only thing on the brand’s radar, which led them to their North American expansion in 1959.

With the founding of American Honda Motor Co., Inc. in Los Angeles in 1959, Americans got a taste of the brand through its minibike options. The minibike was a blend of motorcycle and moped, offering a quick way to get from one point to another, especially for younger drivers and commuters. As the 1950s pushed into the 1960s, Honda’s vision became clear as the brand introduced its first four-wheeled vehicle in the United States. That vehicle, the Honda N600, was a small, two-door car that hit dealerships in 1969. It turned out to be perfect timing for the brand as the automotive industry shifted from muscle cars to vehicles that offered better fuel efficiency in the early 1970s.

With this shift came the debuts of the Honda Accord and Civic, both of which satisfied the demand for efficiency but also gave the public affordability and reliability—and this continues today with the newest iterations of the Accord and Civic. It was clear that Honda had found the right formula for their brand, and they quickly offered more models to meet demand.

As the 1990s got underway, the company launched the fuel-efficient and eco-friendly Honda Insight, one of the country's first hybrid vehicles. The 1990s also saw the introduction of the well-liked Honda Odyssey minivan and the aggressive S2000 roadster, demonstrating Honda's adaptability in satisfying a wide range of customer demands. Along with these options, Honda introduced the CR-V to compete with the growing SUV class, which was yet again right in line with what drivers needed and wanted. Today, the Honda CR-V continues to be one of the top-selling SUVs in the nation.

In the 2010s, electrification and fuel economy gained more attention, leading to the introduction of the Honda Fit EV and the Clarity series, which furthered the company's dedication to environmentally friendly mobility. In addition, Honda stayed the course, designing cutting-edge safety features and driver assistance technologies to keep up with changing customer demands.

Today, the brand is still focused on quality, innovation, and a dedication to satisfying the changing demands of American customers, which is seen throughout its current lineup.
